Gotta love Samuel Pepys: 1/13/1668 sees a dirty French book and is ashamed. 2/8/1668 returns to bookstore “and there staid an hour and bought the idle, roguish book…” Next morning rationalizes purchase with “a mighty lewd book, but not yet amiss for a sober man once to read over to inform himself [of] the villany of the world.” Then finally “I to my chamber, where I did read through L’escholle des filles…and after I had done it I burned it, that it might not be among my books to my shame.”
