I recently read The Speechwriter. I enjoyed his analysis of political speech writing but this is one of my favorites:
“Everybody complains that politics separates words from their meanings, and this is part of the reason why. Words are useful, but often their meanings are not. Sometimes what you want is feeling rather than meaning, warmth rather content.”
He frames this in a tradition going back to the Sophists. I wonder if the electorate realize how differently political writers think about speeches versus how the constituent hears it.
